Last month's social group theme was Building and our learners did amazing trying all the new activities we had for them! 🌉🏙 We made marshmallow and toothpick houses and bridges, block towers using shaving cream as glue, cup-stacking towers, and more! Vista had our first field trip of the school year last week! An ambulance from @turnergroupofco came to our centre to teach our kiddos all about ambulances, paramedics, and the equipment they use. Our learners got to ride on a stretcher, take their blood pressure and heart rate, and ask so many questions during this ambulance visit. The kiddos had so much fun during video game day last week! 🎮 Our learners strengthened Vista's defense against the villain of the day (Bowser) by completing different levels, including: colouring, paper crafts, pin-the-tail-on-the-wisp, and a power-up scavenger hunt. Functional communication is so important for lots of our learners and C's BI never misses out on an opportunity to model it to C. When C wants something, his BI says "I want ___" and points to the "I want" square on his functional communication board. In this case, C really wanted one of the glitters wands his BI was playing with and after modelling "I want glitter wand", his BI gave him the glitter wand. Costume contest!! S came up with the idea for this super cool costume and challenged one of our BIs to a costume contest. Uno is such a fun game and it's also a great way to teach new skills to our learners! O practiced skills such as tolerating losing, turn-taking, and planning while playing with his BIs. This was also a perfect opportunity to model positive self-talk even when losing, which is a skill that can be really difficult for lots of kiddos and adults alike. Shoe-tying can be difficult for lots of our learners but J has blown us away with his new skills! When J first starting the shoe-tying program, he would watch and imitate his BI model shoe-tying on a separate shoe on the table. J can now independently follow the shoe-tying steps to tie a shoe on his own foot! D has been really interested collecting cool coins lately and here's a pic of him cleaning a really old one to make it look shiny and new! D and his BI turned D's interest into a science research project when they did some learning about what substances are harmful vs. safe to use with the metals that coins from different time periods are made out of. Communication looks different for everyone - some prefer speaking, some prefer written form, and some prefer visual communication. Many of our Vista learners are learning to use iPads with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) programs such as Proloquo2Go or TouchChat HD. By donating an iPad or funds we are looking to provide an in-house AAC to support our learners. Today is the first day of November and #GivingTuesday2023 is coming up at the end of the month! We're so excited to be fundraising but we also understand that many of our community members are not always in a place to be able to donate funds. There are many ways to give and not all of them are financial. Here are a few more ways to give for this GivingTuesday: 1. BOTTLES: Donate your bottles at any of the Columbia Bottle Depot locations in Kelowna (1314 St. Paul St., 1936 Kent Rd., or 680 Dease Rd.) in Vista's name! You can do this by punching in Vista's phone number, (250) 300-0763, at one of the Return-It Express machines. The machines will print a sticker that you can put on your bag and then you can leave the bag with one of their staff members to do the sorting and send the funds to Vista. 2. RESOURCES: We are always accepting toys, arts and crafts, sensory equipment, clothes, learning materials, etc. as donations at Vista! Donations can be dropped off Monday-Friday between 8:30am to 4:00pm. 3. TIME: Volunteers are always welcome at Vista. E had such a great time filling up our treepod swing with different toys from our sensory room. It's that time of year again - #GivingTuesday2023 is coming up this Tuesday, November 28th! We're so excited to announce the launch of three new fundraising initiatives for this year's season of giving. The Sensory Fund, Learning Expansion Fund, and Reinforcer Fund are all efforts to maximize the quality of learning for our Vista clients. The Sensory Fund will work towards increasing the number of sensory toys available to help regulate our clients (sensory board, spinning toys, etc.). The Learning Expansion Fund's aim is to enhance the learning tools available to us at Vista, including more science experiments and tactiles. A few of our learners are learning about social boundaries with both family and community workers. When J is shown a photo of a body part or person, J's BI asks "can we touch people here?" or "can we give this person a hug without asking?" While B and her BI were playing, her BI would sometimes add things that B may not want on the train track. If B did not want this, her BI would encourage her to practice saying "no," "I don't like it" or "please stop." Who said the marble track can only be used for marbles? We love encouraging our learners to be creative when playing with any of our toys. H loves building marble tracks and watching all the marbles race down to the bottom, but H has found that he also likes to use the marble track pieces to build other objects. Building objects allows H to practice his planning skills and fine motor skills, while also working on his toleration skills when pieces don't fit the way we want them to or when something falls apart. We had a blast at the Rutland Waterpark during last week's adventure camp!!🤩 Our kiddos (and BIs too!) had so much fun spraying and chasing each other, playing at the park, and adventuring through the trees. A has done so well with the new circle time program that we started at Vista this school year! During circle time, our learners get to practice their toleration for joining a group activity, while also participating in circle time. Learners practice answering questions about the calendar, weather, and seasons and this is followed by a mini-lesson, song, and book reading. In this picture, A had just participated in the mini-lesson where we learned about shape names and how to draw them.
